Sutherland Institute Applauds New LDS Church Statement on Immigration
Over the last several years, Sutherland Institute has supported a sensible, reality-based approach to solving Utah’s complex immigration issues that, at a fundamental level, recognizes undocumented immigrants as human beings. Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a new statement casting the issue in a similar light.

Why Are DUI Offenders Using Utahns’ Tax Dollars for Assessment and Treatment?
Sutherland Institute released a video report today detailing how Utah tax dollars are used to pay for assessment and treatment of DUI offenders. Produced by Sutherland Multimedia Reporter Alexis Young, the video documents how Assessment and Referral Services (ARS), a University of Utah clinic, receives state and federal support to cover the fees of some of its clients.

Nuclear Experts to Discuss Nuclear Power in Utah with Sutherland Institute
As part of his 10-Year Strategic Energy Plan, Governor Gary Herbert recently recommended that Utah “facilitate dialogue regarding Utah’s potential opportunity for nuclear power development.” In light of this recommendation, Sutherland Institute will host the first of three nuclear energy forums Tuesday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Sutherland Institute headquarters.

Sutherland Institute has hired three new employees, two for its development work and one for communications. Bette Arial and Todd Sylvester are joining the development department, directed by Liv Moffat, while Alexis Young is adding her skill set to the communications department, led by Dave Buer.

Originally delivered seven years ago during a session of Sutherland’s award-winning Transcend Series, the essay defines 11 characteristics of right-wing extremism in Utah.

Sutherland Institute Paper Shows Film Subsidies Unnecessary, Urges Legislators to Defeat HB 99
A new paper by Sutherland Institute Policy Analyst Matthew C. Piccolo challenges the need for grants from the Motion Picture Incentive Fund (MPIF) distributed by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED). MPIF unfairly and unnecessarily benefits a few hand-picked companies and puts their competitors at an economic disadvantage, Piccolo writes.
