Utah Schools at a Glance

The Sutherland Institute’s philosophy is simple: We believe that parents are responsible for their childrens' education and that the state role in education is primarily as a support to parents. We also believe that educational freedom is a necessary ingredient in providing the best education possible for each individual student.

How Fast is Utah Spending Your Money?

Clock Methodology

The Utah State Spending Clock represents the rate at which the state of Utah is spending your money.  Its purpose is to help the citizens of this state understand the size of its government.

The clock started calculating at 12:00:01 am on July 1, 2009 and will continue through midnight June 30, 2010 when it will be reset. This coincides with the State of Utah's fiscal year. It clicks at just over $361 per second. The spending figure is based on the state budget summary published in March 2009.

"President Reagan once commented, 'Man is not free unless government is limited. ... As government expands, liberty contracts,'" Katie Christensen, Sutherland's manager of public relations, wrote in an opinion-editorial that appeared in the Deseret News on June 29, 2008. "Either Utah taxpayers are overpaying for government or... the government has significantly grown."
